| Archive
is a new section here at Matt Wolf Art and Design. There have been
many paintings that I have completed over the years that later on
I decided weren't up to a high enough standard of quality to keep
on the site. Previously, I had been removing the pieces and that was
the end of it. Recently, I decided that rather than removing the paintings
completely, I would take the less successful pieces and move them
into this section. I see the Archive section
as a place were we can look at these less successful paintings and
see my growth as an artist. |

Marvel
Comics Archive - Daredevil, Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men
|
|
|
|
|
|
| The above illustrations are
some of my earliest attempts at painting various Marvel characters.
The Daredevil painting is probably the worst thing on this page though.
I like the Spider-Man painting but the rendering on Spidey isn't quite
up to par. The Iron Man painting shows that painting his colored armor
is one of the more difficult things to accomplish. The 2 black and
white X-Men illustrations are pretty decent but I decided to remove
most of the traditional media works from the site; this is why these
drawings are in Archive. The bottom three are part of a Marvel Comics
submission that I never finished. I was having trouble finishing the
backgrounds and pulling all the elements together. The other reason
I abandoned the submission is that for sequential art, Marvel likes
to see pencils only. I discovered this after spending months working
on full color pages. |

DC
Comics Archive - Batman and Superman
|
|
|
|
| The Batman painting is one
of the earliest digital paintings I ever completed and it shows. Although
not as much as in the Superman painting in the middle. Really nothing
about that painting works. I tried to remedy that situation with the
painting on the right, but that painting just doesn't hit the level
of realism I am trying to achieve. Not to say my paintings are ultra-realistic
but I want enough realism in them to give them a foundation in reality.
The last painting is just too cartoony. |

Original
Creations - The Doorman, Luna, and The Legends of Battleground
|
|
|
|
| I've done a lot of Doorman
paintings over the years and many of them aren't very good. I picked
the best ones and filed them in Comic
Book Art. The center drawing is actually halfway decent but since
there is no background it looks fairly incomplete and I want to focus
on completed paintings on this website. I actually have a bunch of
works in progress that I am holding off on positing until they are
complete. The King Winthrope black and white drawing is actually pretty
good but like I mentioned previously, I am focusing only on completed,
digital work. The color
version of King Winthrope has a lot of problems. That Luna up
in the right hand corner was remedied here. |

|
|
|
| Here's a few random sketches
that were up on the website at various times. Actually they're all
mostly OK, which is part of the reason why I moved them over here.
The only one that really stands out to me is the scary Halle Berry
painting. |
